The sole judge in Rome, upgrading the charge from stalking to threats and assault against a former partner, sentenced journalist Enrico Varriale to seven months (suspended sentence).
A provisional payment of €2,000 was also ordered to the civil plaintiff. The prosecutor had requested a six-month sentence.
The incident dates back to the period between December 2021 and February 2022. Varriale had previously been sentenced to 10 months—with a suspended sentence—for stalking and assault against another former partner.
"It's impossible to comment without reading the motivation. It's impossible to understand what happened in this trial. Varriale, accused of stalking, was convicted of threatening. How a conviction for threatening could have been reached is incomprehensible. A trial full of lies," commented lawyers Fabio Lattanzi and Ester Molinaro, the journalist's defense attorneys, who announced their intention to appeal.
