David Sassoli, the president of the European Parliament who died on Monday night, opened this morning in the Campidoglio in Rome.

In the Sala della Protomoteca in Campidoglio, the first to welcome the coffin, together with the Sassoli family, was the mayor of Rome Roberto Gualtieri. Immediately the visit of the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, then that of Prime Minister Mario Draghi. The president of the EU Commission Ursula von der Leyen and the number one of the EU Council Charles Michel are expected.

Today, all the highest officials of the state, politicians, but also friends, colleagues of today and yesterday, and the many who have expressed sincere sorrow for the disappearance in recent days will parade. Dozens were already queuing up at dawn to be able to pay Sassoli their last tribute.

On Friday the state funeral in Rome, approved by the Council of Ministers, will put a seal on the emotion of the whole of Europe for the disappearance of the former face of Tg1. The funeral will be held in the Basilica of S. Maria degli Angeli, in Piazza della Repubblica, and the mass will be celebrated by the cardinal and archbishop of Bologna Matteo Zuppi.
