"That boy should have been in prison, not dead. I feel sorry for his family. I'm sad and sorry for what I did. But I felt desperate."

Carmelo Cinturrino , assistant chief of the State Police, wrote this in a letter delivered to his lawyer, Piero Porciani. Cinturrino is in prison on charges of voluntary homicide for killing Abderrahim Mansouri last January 26 in the Rogoredo woods, in Milan.

In the letter, written in capital letters, the policeman states that he has "always been honest and a servant of the State" and concludes by apologizing again: "Forgive me, I will pay for my mistake."
