A large-scale raid coordinated by the Naples District Anti-Mafia Directorate this morning resulted in the execution of 44 precautionary measures—34 in prison and 10 under house arrest —against alleged members and supporters of the Russo clan, active in the Nola area. The operation was conducted by the Carabinieri of the Castello di Cisterna Investigative Unit on the orders of investigating judge Iaselli.
According to what emerged from the investigation, coordinated by prosecutors Henry John Woodcock and Simona Toscano, the clan exercised widespread control over the economic activities of three municipalities in the Naples area: Nola , Cicciano and Casamarciano .
According to investigators, this management occurred both directly and through a dense network of intermediaries.
Investigators are charged, to varying degrees, with the crimes of mafia association, extortion, attempted extortion, illegal gambling, and various crimes aggravated by mafia methods and aimed at benefiting the clan to which they belong. The charges also include political-mafia election-rigging.
The investigations also revealed serious interference by the clan in the local elections of Cicciano, in May 2023, and Casamarciano, in June 2022.
According to investigators, the criminal group attempted to influence the vote through third parties, thus influencing the electoral competition.
Details of the operation will be presented during a press conference scheduled for 10:30 a.m. in the conference room of the Naples Prosecutor's Office.
