Tragedy during an amateur cycling race in Montemesola, in the Tarantino area.

A 58-year-old cyclist was hit by a car when there was about 30 km to go to the finish line. The impact proved fatal.

The man, Massimo Ferilli, took part in the “Madonna della Fontana” trophy: the carabinieri are carrying out investigations.

At first it seemed that the victim had ended up against the parked car, but it later emerged that the cyclist was hit by a Fiat Cinquecento X driven by a 46-year-old from Montemesola who was returning home. The car passed through one of the gates that had to remain off limits until the end of the race.

The awards, as a sign of mourning, have been canceled.
