Two swimmers bitten in the waters of Cilento, between Pioppi and Palinuro, suffered calf injuries with significant blood loss , requiring medical attention. The latest case occurred in Palinuro, in the Saline area, where a 76-year-old man suffered a calf injury. A few days earlier, a 55-year-old Swiss tourist had been treated for a similar injury in Pioppi.

In Palinuro, the swimmer managed to reach shore and was assisted by lifeguards on the beach, who administered first aid while awaiting the arrival of medical personnel. The man was then handed over to the local emergency unit for treatment.

In Pioppi, a Swiss tourist suffered a similar injury, also to his calf, resulting in significant blood loss. The man, who is undergoing anticoagulant therapy, was transferred to the hospital for treatment.

The species responsible for the two incidents has not yet been identified. Among the hypotheses being discussed is that it recalls some tropical species now increasingly present in the Mediterranean, such as the triggerfish and barracuda, but at this time there is insufficient evidence to definitively attribute the bites to a specific animal.

Further investigations are planned to clarify what happened.
