Morbid personal curiosity or a plan with a principal? An answer to this question will be sought in the smartphones, tablets, hard drives and computer devices that were seized in recent days from Vincenzo Coviello, the former employee of Intesa Sanpaolo who from his workplace in Bisceglie spied on thousands of bank movements of politicians, well-known figures from the world of entertainment and sports and even ordinary people .

Meanwhile, Intesa Sanpaolo apologizes and assures: "What happened must never happen again, but there was no problem with IT security ", with respect to which the bank is "in the best international positions".

"A dishonest employee of our bank, with behavior that seriously violated the rules, regulations and internal procedures, consulted data and information regarding some customers in an unjustified manner . The internal control system identified it, we sent a notification to the Privacy Guarantor, we fired the dishonest employee and filed a complaint as an injured party", explains Intesa.

In the next few days, the Bari prosecutor's office will assign the task to technicians to reconstruct the times, methods and types of access to the bank's confidential data, but also any contacts that Coviello may have had before or after each access and to understand whether he actually kept the information collected only for himself, as he said . A version that still needs to be verified and which at the moment does not seem to convince the Bari prosecutor's office, which is investigating the former bank employee for unauthorized access to computer systems and attempted procurement of information concerning state security.

The prosecution believes it is likely that Coviello acted in conjunction with a principal and recipient of confidential information that, "in the political, internal or international interest of the State, had to remain secret" . Coviello allegedly made 6,637 unauthorized accesses between February 2022 and April 2024 , viewing the bank movements of 3,572 people : among them 34 politicians, Prime Minister Meloni, her sister Arianna and her former partner Giambruno, six former Prime Ministers, ministers including the Minister of Defense, Guido Crosetto, and also members of the opposition. Another 43 are actors, singers or athletes. The others are people inside the bank or who are part of Coviello's private sphere .

Those who knew him believe it is unlikely that the 52-year-old accountant from Bitonto was capable of compiling dossiers. But the affair, on which the Bank of Italy intervened by asking Intesa "to provide clarifications on what happened and on the initiatives it intends to undertake", has revealed the extreme ease with which the system is permeable and for days has sparked political debate with mutual accusations between the factions of being scandalized only when the dossiers concern their own political party.

The prime minister yesterday defined herself as "the most dossiered in Italy" for the leader of the FdI group in the Chamber, Tommaso Foti, it is "a very serious matter that adds to the one that, in recent months, had led to the identification of state officials dedicated to dossier-gathering activities". The leader of the Pd senators, Francesco Boccia , responds. "I see that authoritative exponents of the right, evidently short of arguments, continue in the game, dear to them, of appearing victims of who knows what conspiracy in front of public opinion. But they should stop. The dossier-gathering activities that are emerging to the detriment of institutions and politics are certainly serious but they are affecting everyone, as unfortunately has already happened in the past: well-known figures, men and women of the majority as well as the opposition ".
