A breakthrough has been achieved in the investigation into the death of Salerno journalist Luigi “Luca” Esposito, who was found charred last Sunday on farmland in Eboli.

Following investigations led by the Salerno Public Prosecutor's Office and conducted by the Investigative Unit of the Salerno Provincial Command, the man believed to be responsible for the murder of the 53-year-old has been identified and arrested on suspicion of crime. He is a 26-year-old homeless man with no fixed address and no permit in Italy. The young man was apprehended by the Carabinieri in an abandoned farmhouse in the countryside of the town of Piana del Sele. The Carabinieri intervention was supported by the Technical Investigations Unit of the ROS (Italian Special Operations Squad) and the Puglia Hunters Squadron.

According to investigators' reconstruction, Esposito and the 26-year-old had known each other for some time and had spoken to and then met on Saturday. They reportedly had an argument. The young man then violently and repeatedly struck the victim, causing fractures to various parts of his body.

Subsequently , using plastic material, a blanket and various brushwood, he had set him on fire, when the man, as emerged from the autopsy, was not yet dead .

The young foreigner, once located and taken to the offices of the Investigative Unit of the Provincial Carabinieri Command of Salerno, decided to recount what happened and during an interrogation conducted by the prosecutor, who had coordinated the investigation from the outset, in the presence of his defense lawyer, he confessed.

He was then transferred to the Salerno prison pending validation of the arrest by the preliminary investigations judge.
