False alarm at Bologna Marconi airport due to what was believed to be a gun hidden in a passenger's luggage. In the afternoon, operations remained blocked for a few hours for safety reasons: numerous flights were cancelled, several departed with heavy delays, while others were diverted to other airports.
The Bologna police headquarters explains that there was a reading error caused by a new machine that recently arrived at Marconi : "Due to human or technical error , an alert was created, due to the presence of the outline of a gun inside a suitcase." But inside the luggage there was nothing of the sort.
The emergency arose shortly after 2pm, after some agents from the Polaria, the air border police, searched for the weapon inside a piece of luggage. Three flights arriving from Brindisi, Brussels and Stockholm were immediately diverted, those starting at 2.30pm were postponed to the evening.
