The first phase of IT-Wallet, the Italian digital wallet on the IO app, has been tested. Starting today, all citizens can access the tool and obtain the digital version of their documents.
Activation is free, optional and available to all adults with valid documents. How do you do it? Just update or install the IO app on your device and log in with your digital identity. With the new "Documents on IO" feature, you can add your driving license, health card - European Health Insurance Card and European Disability Card to the "Wallet" section.
At that point, digital documents can be used as if they were physical : the driving license in case of checks by the police; the health card - European Health Insurance Card to access the services provided by the national health service. The European disability card will have the same uses already foreseen by the physical version of the document in Italy.
Digital data is made available by the same entities that issue physical documents, guaranteeing authenticity and security thanks to access with CIE or SPID.
"Today, with the introduction of the first phase of IT-Wallet, a real digital revolution begins for our country ," says Alessio Butti, Undersecretary to the Presidency of the Council with responsibility for technological innovation. "Thanks to the possibility of obtaining their documents in digital version, such as the Driving License, the Health Card and the European Disability Card, citizens will be able to experience first-hand on the IO app, if they want, an innovation that simplifies the relationship between the State, citizens and businesses, and opens up new perspectives for the evolution of public and private services ," he explains. "After two years of intense teamwork with some of the most important institutions in our country, we are moving from an experimental phase to a concrete innovation that will be accessible to all those who express their consent. Those who wish will be able to continue using physical documents in traditional ways."
"As with physical documents - it is specified in a note - the data remains under the exclusive control of the citizen and the Public Administration owner. The process complies with the legislation on the protection of personal data. No document is added to the IO digital wallet without the explicit request of the users. Citizens who prefer will therefore be able to continue to use only physical documents ".
