He had no escape. Ignazio Casula, a 61-year-old carpenter from Quartu, died yesterday on State Road 197, hit by three cars just over a kilometer from the Furtei junction . Around 5:30 p.m., the man parked his Iveco van on the edge of the road and, while he was reaching the other side of the road to buy some artichokes, he was hit first by a Mitsubishi pick-up and then by two other cars, one of which fled after the impact.

The dynamics

The emergency call to 118 was immediately made, but there was nothing that could be done for the 61-year-old. At kilometer 26 of the state road, the Carabinieri of the town station and the Sanluri company, under the command of Major Nadia Gioviale, intervened, who carried out the legal surveys and reconstructed the dynamics of the accident, the municipal police officers of Furtei, the firefighters of Sanluri and the traffic police of Sanluri in support to help manage the traffic. Traffic in the section of the state road where the accident occurred was blocked for several hours and the cars were diverted onto a country road that leads to the center of Furtei.

The victim

On that patch of asphalt closed to motorists and onlookers, the Carabinieri recorded the words of the motorists and notified the victim's family, already affected a year ago by the death of their son Mattia, killed at 28 by an illness against which he had fought for a long time.

The safety

Yesterday's tragedy forcefully reiterates the issue of safety on the roads of Marmilla and, in particular, on the State Road 197, the scene of numerous accidents in the past, some of which were fatal. "I have always represented the danger of this road and expressed the need to provide fixed systems for detecting the speed of vehicles, also evaluating the tutor system for the most dangerous sections," says Mayor Nicola Cau on the phone.
