Former minister Virginio Rognoni died in his sleep last night in his home in Pavia.

98 years old in August, he was one of the best-known Italian politicians of the second half of the twentieth century and a leading exponent of the DC.

After graduating in Law, he became professor of procedural law institutions at the University of Pavia and also practiced as a lawyer. In his city he was first a municipal councilor, then deputy mayor and city planning councilor. In 1968 he was elected to the House and reconfirmed for 7 terms, becoming its vice president from 1976 to 1978.

When Francesco Cossiga , following the murder of Aldo Moro, resigned, Rognoni was appointed in his place as Minister of the Interior and therefore faced the so-called years of lead .
