Promoted by the Hospital Procurement Coordination (COP) of the AOU of Sassari, AIDO and the Fondazione Banca degli Occhi, the initiative will involve Dinamo Sassari and Reyer Venezia on Sunday at the PalaSerradimigni, who will face off for the basketball championship.
A brief but meaningful moment before the race will be dedicated to spreading a message of great social relevance: a speaker and a symbolic photo will raise awareness among the audience about the importance of organ and tissue donation. A simple yet powerful gesture, capable of reaching a wide audience thanks to the involvement of the world of sport.
For the occasion, the two teams will take to the field with banners from the Veneto Eye Bank Foundation and AIDO, together with volunteers from the Sassari-Ittiri intermunicipal group, and the Hospital Procurement Coordination of the AOU of Sassari, organizations committed daily to promoting the culture of donation and supporting the transplant network.
In 2025, the Italian transplant network achieved record results, with 2,164 organ donations and 4,697 transplants performed. However, approximately 8,000 patients remain on the waiting list, and the donation refusal rate remains high, around 31%, especially among younger patients.
The AOU of Sassari is a national leader in the field of donation: in 2024, a non-beating heart donation program was launched alongside the beating heart donation program, while in 2025 , the institution was the first in Sardinia to launch a cornea donation program extended to all deceased patients, thanks to its collaboration with the Eye Bank Foundation.
