The "Concerts d'Estiu" are returning to Alghero, a series of traveling concerts dedicated to traditional folk music organized by the Coro Polifonico Algherese as part of the 30th edition of Estudi Polifonic, the concert program organized by the historic Alghero association under the artistic direction of maestro Ugo Spanu, which will accompany enthusiasts throughout the year with its various festivals. In the first of two events, scheduled for Saturday, July 25th, at 9:00 PM in Alghero, three choirs will perform Sardinian and Catalan folk choral music through the streets of the historic center (with two performances in Piazza Ginnasio and Piazza del Teatro) and will accompany enthusiasts, tourists, and the curious to the Cathedral of Santa Maria, where a final performance is scheduled for 10:00 PM.
The stars of Saturday's event will be the Coro de Iddanoa Monteleone, directed by Maestro Paolo Carta, the Coro Prendas de Armonias di Mampiada, directed by Maestro Claudio Deledda, and the Coro Polifonico Algherese, directed by Ugo Spanu.
The Coro de Iddanoa Monteleone, already active since 1978, was reunited in February 1995 at the initiative of a group of enthusiasts. Formed as a cultural association in 1999, its primary goal is to re-evaluate and revive Sardinian folk traditions in general, and those of song in particular. The choir is divided into four voices: first tenors (boghe), second tenors (mesa 'oghe), baritones (contra), and basses (bassu), harmonized according to the typical and ancient Sardinian structure, traced by scholars to the eighth-seventh century BC, based on a rigid and repetitive pattern, elementary yet effective. In addition to traditional folk songs (sacred and profane), the choir performs unpublished pieces, setting poems by various Sardinian poets to music, particularly Remundu Piras from Villanova (considered Sardinia's greatest improvisational poet) and Canon Giovanni Delogu-Ibba (who lived in the 1700s and was parish priest of Villanova Monteleone for fifteen years, author of the "Index Libri Vitae" and numerous "gosos"). It has participated in countless village festivals in Sardinia, as well as on various local television programs and at shows and festivals in various locations on the continent and abroad.
The Prendas de Armonias women's choir was founded in June 2012. The association's purpose is the study, research, and practice of choral singing and music in general, with a particular focus on folk tradition. In 2016, it conducted research, culminating in the release of the book/CD "Prendas," which features traditional female folk melodies from the Mamoiada area. The association is also very active in initiatives promoted by the Municipality of Mamoiada, fundraising for the WWF and Telefono Azzurro, and has been committed to organizing two regular events for the past fourteen years: the summer festival "In S'ammentu" and the "Christmas Concert."
Estudi Polifònic is supported by the strategic program of the Sassari Chamber of Commerce, "Salude & Trigu," the Fondazione di Sardegna, the Autonomous Region of Sardinia, the Fondazione Alghero, and the patronage of the Municipality of Alghero. The event will take place on Saturday, July 25th, at 9:00 pm, with the performance starting in Piazza Ginnasio and concluding in the Cathedral.
