An exhibition space that will contain the skeleton of a female sperm whale , found beached in Cala Romantica-Porto Cervo, will be inaugurated on November 10 , in the Environmental Education Center (CEA) of the National Park, in Caprera, on March 28, 2019 .
The cetacean was carrying her baby in her womb while 22 kg of plastic were found in the stomach which resulted in the death of both, mother and unborn child.
On the same day, the director of the Park, Giulio Plastina, who recently took office at the helm of the organization, but who managed to accelerate the operation for which 30,000 euros had been allocated, organized a workshop on environmental sustainability .
The skeleton of the sperm whale, almost 8 meters long, weighing 201 kg (only the head weighs 69), will arrive at La Maddalena on November 8, and the experts of the University of Padua, who have taken care of the recovery, will provide for mount it . It was not possible to recover the puppy that was never born as it was not yet sufficiently formed as a skeleton. Instead, there will be the plastic they found inside the stomach , which will be placed inside the skeleton. Everything, as mentioned, will be exhibited in a shed of the CEA, which will partly house the Cetacean Museum and partly will be destined for the Sea Turtle Recovery Center.
The first examinations on the skeleton, in 2019, were carried out by the SEAME Sardinia association and it will be the same association chaired by Luca Bittau who, on behalf of the National Park, will organize guided tours inside the Caprera exhibition space, for the schools of the territory and for all other visitors.
