Christmas is coming, and it will be a bloodbath for the Sardinians to set the table for the holidays . Everything costs more and more, even essential goods such as pasta, oil, rice, flour and bread.
The alarm on the price increases was raised by Adiconsum Cagliari , which analysed Istat data and carried out surveys in supermarkets and local markets.
A short list: fresh fruit and vegetables are spent 5.7% more than a year ago, and dried fruit is even 32% . And again: +15% for clams, in pastry shops price increases of over 30% compared to 2023, while those for panettone and pandoro are more modest (respectively +5.4 and +4%) .
Primary goods - warns the association - such as pasta, oil, rice, flour and bread have registered an overall increase of 84% in the last decade . Prices have therefore almost doubled, and with salaries remaining at a standstill, consumers' purchasing power is decreasing.
The cause of the price increases is the wholesale increases that are passed on to consumers. Some examples: flour from 37 to 69 euros per quintal (+86%), butter from 5.8 to 10 euros per kilo (+72%), chocolate from 25 to 35 euros per kilo (+40%), sugar from 0.95 to 1.30 euros (+37%) . And dining out is not the solution, it costs 4.4% more on average than a year ago.
"This year's price increases - underlines Simone Girau, president of Adiconsum Cagliari - are hitting Cagliari families hard, who risk having to make sacrifices even on Christmas traditions. We invite all consumers to plan their purchases and to prefer local markets for fresh products at competitive prices ".
