Arbatax celebrates San Silverio, the patron saint of sailors and fishermen , patron saint of Ponza, the island from which many families of the Borgo originate.
The Arbataxian community, on Monday 20 June, through the organization of the parish and the Stella Maris committee, renews the strong bond that unites it with the Pontine island in the cult of the holy Martyr.
Right from Ponza in the early years of the last century a group of fishermen left with their boats that reached Arbatax. Many of them returned there with their families and moved, taking root. The same ritual is celebrated on the same day, June 20, in the same sea but hundreds of miles from the seaside village.
In Arbatax the appointment is at 6:30 pm, with the characteristic procession with San Silverio on a sedan chair in the shape of a fishing boat , adorned with many red carnations, which will depart from the Stella Maris church towards the Levante pier. Here at 7 pm Holy Mass will be celebrated. The saint's simulacrum will then be hoisted onto a boat that will guide the procession into the sea with the blessing of the fishermen, boats and the sea.
For the occasion, the commander of the port, Lieutenant of Vascello Francesco Maria Frasconi, issued an ordinance that governs the safe carrying out of the procession at sea: from 19 to 21, in the area affected by the event it is forbidden to anchor and stop with any boat both for pleasure and for professional use . Transiting units must pay the utmost attention, keeping a safe distance from the convoy and at the minimum maneuvering speed.
