American actor and comedian Bill Cosby, best known for his role as the father in the 1990s sitcom 'The Cosby Show', has been ordered by a Los Angeles civil court to pay $19.25 million for sexually abusing a woman in 1972 .
Donna Motsinger, then a waitress at a restaurant in Sausalito, in the San Francisco Bay Area, had agreed to go to see one of his shows, after which the actor drugged and raped her .
“It took 54 years to get justice, and I know it’s not complete, but I hope it can help other women a little ,” Motsinger said as she left the Santa Monica courtroom where the verdict was read.
The actor, now 88, went from being one of the most beloved and well-known comedians in the United States to one of the most well-known faces in the #MeToo movement, with dozens of women reporting harassment and violence. His only criminal conviction for sexual assault was overturned in 2021 on procedural grounds, after the former small-screen star served three years of a ten-year sentence in a maximum-security prison in Philadelphia . His lawyer in the Los Angeles civil case, Jennifer Bonjean, has announced an appeal. The trial was possible because there is no statute of limitations on civil sexual assault charges in California.
