Sardinians stood out on the second day of the Italian Men's Second Division Tennis Championships on the clay courts of TC Cagliari: tomorrow they too will compete for a spot in the final draw of the tournament that awards the championship.
Host Samuele Porcu made an excellent debut (6-2 doubles) against Neapolitan Franco Ciafardini. Mattia Secci (Quattro Mori Tennis Team) had a more complicated comeback victory over Perugia's Tommaso Clementini: 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Riccardo Ciulli (Quattro Mori) made a clean start against 6-foot-1 Neapolitan Pietro Monfrecola: 6-0 doubles. Cristian Pilia (Sporting Ct Quartu) also performed well: 6-4 doubles against Giuseppe Pazzi of TC Vomero. Daniel Frasconi (TC Terranova) also came away with a win against Antonio Di Giacomo of TC Napoli: 7-5, 6-3. Tommaso Nurra (TC Alghero) advanced in straight sets (6-4 doubles) against Canottieri Roma representative Andrea Meneschincheri.
Tomorrow, the first decisions of the tournament will be made at TC Cagliari, assigning the ten spots in the final draw. Then, starting Monday, the Championships (with a €13,000 prize pool) will get into full swing with the arrival of the big names in Sardinia, starting with the reigning champion Alessandro Ingarao.
It's going to be a hot week: the singles and doubles championships are up for grabs. The finals are on Saturday, July 25th.
