A friendship spanning over forty years, rich in stories from around the world, on an intimate journey through jazz, silence, and island roots. " Heritage " is the new, memorable album by S'ardmusic featuring the two island masters Bebo Ferra and Salvatore Maiore , available today on streaming platforms thanks to Egeamusic .
Recorded and produced in January of this year by Michele Palmas , the work had its genesis as early as 2024 thanks to a happy intuition by Paolo Fresu , who, within his production center Insulae Lab, proposed to guitarist Ferra and cellist Maiore to transpose into music their decades-long complicity , enriched over the years by the experiences lived by each of them during their tireless musical activity around the world. And although their respective paths have taken them far away, after leaving the Island in the late 1980s, in "Heritage" a strong and sincere desire to return home now emerges in thirteen songs, like chapters of a journey back to their origins .
Thus unfolds a sparse, essential yet nuanced dialogue, like that between two old friends, in which all effects are set aside to allow the woodwinds and strings of guitar and cello to take center stage. In a fascinating blend of contemporary jazz, chamber music, and Mediterranean influences , the theme of musical heritage is approached not statically, but as a living material that evolves the very moment it is played. The heart of the album is, in fact, the act of improvisation , with subtle dynamics in which silences are as important as individual notes.
The strength of "Heritage" lies in the contradiction in the souls of its authors, who, despite their internationally renowned writing, never deny a profound sonic soul that remains viscerally tied to their Sardinian identity . And the island, like an invisible filter through which every gesture and sound passes, is evoked in its ancestral aspects both by Maiore's cello, between bow and pizzicato, and by the lyrical and poetic phrasing of Ferra's guitar. An invitation to the whole world to slow down and listen to a dialogue full of balance and remarkable artistic sensitivity .
