Floyd case: former agent Chauvin convicted of murder
The verdict of the Minneapolis jury
The verdict came on the Italian night: in Minneapolis the trial for the killing of George Floyd ended with the conviction for murder of Derek Chauvin, a former police officer who on May 25 last year caused the death of the 46-year-old African American.
It took ten hours of council chamber for the jury to try the accused on three counts.
The hundreds of people who had gathered in front of the court greeted the verdict with ovations and exultation, then a roaring applause and shouts of joy.
Chauvin listened to the decision without showing any emotion and now faces up to 40 years in prison. For now he goes to jail, while until now he was at liberty upon payment of the bail.
Among the first to call Floyd's family, US President Joe Biden who said: "I will take you to the White House aboard Air Force One". Then the speech to the nation with a speech in which he stressed, among other things, "today we have taken a step forward against the systemic racism that is a stain on the soul of our country".
THE CASE - On May 25, 2020, a shopkeeper called the police to report that a man had bought a pack of cigarettes probably using a fake $ 20 bill. The request to return the package turned out to be unsuccessful, then the call to 911. When the agents arrived on the spot, one of the two ordered Floyd to get his hands on the wheel of the SUV he had in the meantime got on. A fight had arisen and the 46-year-old was forcibly pulled from the vehicle and arrested. When he fell to the ground next to the patrol, the policemen put him back on his feet but he immediately said he had health problems, in particular that he suffered from claustrophobia. More exciting moments followed until Floyd - already sitting in the car - is dragged out and laid on the pavement, still handcuffed and face down. Shortly after, he had stopped squirming. From the videos recorded by a witness, we see Chauvin holding his knee on the arrested person's neck, while his colleague pressed on the torso. Floyd kept repeating that he couldn't breathe. Finally, an ambulance was called. But the 46-year-old was already unconscious.
