Green light to J&J: "Recommended for over 60". Unlocked the 184 thousand doses still in Pratica di Mare
Same indications given for AstraZeneca: administration recommended for over 60s, but not prohibited for under
There is a "very clear" link between thrombosis events between subjects under 60 and the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, but "very rare" cases and "benefits far outweigh the risks".
So the EMA gave the green light to the single-dose J&J vaccine after the blockade due to six cases of thrombosis out of 7 million injections in the US. The Safety Commission of the European Medicines Agency has recommended adding "very rare cases of non-habitual blood clots" to the list of side effects
The meeting of AIFA with the Ministry of Health was sent by return of post.
The guideline of the drug agency is to recommend the vaccine for the over 60s, as for AstraZeneca. In this way, the first 184 thousand doses stopped for several days in Pratica di Mare can be immediately distributed to the Regions.
For the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, the confirmation of the safety of the US vaccine "is good news for campaigns across the EU". Meanwhile, other suspicious cases have emerged in the US.
THE CAMPAIGN IN ITALY - The emergency commissioner Francesco Figliuolo orders the Regions to vaccinate the frail and the over 60 "in such a proportion as to ensure their safety" before being able to open the campaign to the under 60s.
The general also sets a minimum and maximum goal, daily and weekly, for each Region: from 51,000 daily doses in Lombardy to 620 in Val d'Aosta.
Almost two million doses are expected in Italy on Wednesday evening, 1.5 Pfizer and 430,000 AstraZeneca. To date, 11.2 million citizens have received at least one dose, 18.6% of the population, 55.7% of those over 70.
According to EU Commissioner for the Internal Market Thierry Breton, the goal remains to fully vaccinate 70% of European adults by mid-July. A difficult target for Italy at current rates, about 290,000 average doses per day in the last week. The much evoked half a million injections a day would be needed, which Figliuolo still hopes to reach in early May.
