Trachea transplant on Covid patient: in Italy the first intervention in the world
The man, a 50-year-old, had his organ destroyed due to the disease and treatment
For the first time in the world, a total trachea transplant was performed in a post Covid patient.
The operation took place in Italy, at the Sant'Andrea polyclinic in Rome, on March 3 last year on a 50-year-old man who had his organ destroyed due to the disease and the therapies, and it was perfectly successful.
"The patient was able to speak, breathe and swallow independently immediately," explained Cecilia Menna, thoracic surgeon, who led the surgery.
The trachea was replaced by a fragment of the aorta, held open by a silicone cylinder.
